66 Years of Christmas Tree Tradition

Elmcrest Acres is proud to announce the 66th year of selling Wetthuhn Christmas trees. Family traditions are important, especially around the holidays. Our family tradition is helping your family make memories to last a lifetime.

It all started back in 1945 when Albert Wetthuhn(Dad) began harvesting wild trees from his land to sell in the Chicago area. Eventually trends turned to sheared trees, and Dad would buy from other growers and re-sell. Wanting to have more control over the quality of trees he was selling we began planting our fields with trees in 1979. When all was said and done-there were 150 acres of Wetthuhn Christmas trees. I will never forget the day when he and I were out planting together. He was driving the tractor and I was on the tree planter. He stopped. After a few moments of wondering why I was just sitting there, I asked what he was doing. His response “I cleared this field with a cross-cut saw and now I’m planting it back full again”. I looked out at the 30+ acres we were in and tried to comprehend the work it had taken to clear it.

As I said earlier-family traditions are important, so I enrolled in Michigan State University’s Landscape & Nursery program. They even let me do my work study here on the farm. So Mom & Dad actually paid me twice that summer-wages & tuition! When I graduated I came back home and soon got married. Dave jokes that he married me when he heard my dad had lots of green stuff-he just didn’t know it was trees until it was too late. We both worked on the farm part time and now Dave has his own tree lot in Illinois.

Once people started coming to ask if they could cut their own trees the family decided it was time to branch out. We started hosting Christmas in the Country weekends in 1997. There are several families who have been coming every year, we’ve watched their children grow, and they’ve watched mine. Now that Mom and Dad are gone Dave & I are honored to have this history and tradition as part of our Elmcrest Acres. There aren’t as many acres of trees, but our hearts are full of memories.
